FED:Wellard applies for cattle export permit
Live cattle exports to Indonesia could be boosted significantly by the end of August,
with Wellard Rural Exports applying to the federal government for a permit.
Exports were banned for a month after video footage revealed cruel slaughter techniques
in some Indonesian abattoirs.
The ban was lifted in early July, and Elders has today become the first to resume exports,
loading three thousand cattle onto a ship at Darwin.
Wellard says it's lodged an application to export seven thousand cattle from Wyndham
in Western Australia to two clients based in Indonesia.
Depending on the timing of government approval, Wellard hopes to resume shipping by
mid to late August.

WA: New driver clocked speeding outside her own school
PERTH, Feb 17 AAP - A Perth teenager who received her driving licence on Tuesday morning
was caught speeding outside her school just hours later.
Police said the 17-year-old girl was recorded driving almost 20kph over the limit outside
her own school in Russell Street, Morley, in Perth's northern suburbs.
Traffic police in Western Australia have caught hundreds of motorists during their
recent crackdown on drivers breaking the 40 kilometre an hour speed zone outside primary
and secondary schools.
In the latest breach, the girl was stopped by police conducting radar checks outside
the school, when they recorded her Toyota Corolla travelling at 58kph in the 40kph zone.
Police said the girl told them she had just obtained her licence that morning and was
also a student of the school.
She was fined $100 and lost one demerit point for speeding.

WA:Man critical after police pursuit crash
PERTH, April 14 AAP - A 19-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital following
a car crash during a police pursuit in Perth.
Police said that at about 4am (WST) on Thursday a stolen Ford Falcon crashed at high
speed through a brick wall at a property in Mirrabooka in the city's inner north as it
was pursued by a traffic enforcement car.
The 19-year-old driver had to be cut from the vehicle and is in a critical condition
with head injuries in Royal Perth Hospital, police said.
His 15-year-old male passenger received lesser injuries and is in a stable condition
in the same hospital.
A police spokesman said the pursuing vehicle was some way behind the Ford and the officers
did not see the crash, after chasing the car for a speeding infringement for about three
minutes.
He said the WA Police Internal Affairs Unit would be investigating the incident.
Police closed part of Alexander Drive in Mirrabooka as the crash was investigated.

Liberal candidate DARREN JAMESON has accused Labor of going to desperate lengths to

He says Labor party workers have physically intimidated his campaigners in the seat of Robertson.
Mr JAMESON also claims one of his campaigners was tailgated after he removed signs
from a public property .. while his bicycle workers have been harassed and followed by
a truck placed there by Labor.
Mr JAMESON was yesterday accused of being aggressive towards two boys he believed had

Vic: Nixon called back to commission=2
Ms Nixon denied on Wednesday that she had misled the commission by not telling it she
had gone to the pub.
"I did say in the statement I gave to the (royal) commission that I had a meal and
I didn't say, obviously at the time, that I had gone to a local hotel and had a meal with
two friends," she told ABC Radio on Wednesday.
She was not available for comment on Thursday.
It is believed the commission, headed by former Supreme Court judge Bernard Teague,
will seek clarification on Ms Nixon's movements during the day and evening of February
7.
She has said she was at the State Emergency Response Coordination Centre at police
headquarters between midday and 1.30pm and arrived at the Integrated Emergency Coordination
Centre (IECC) in East Melbourne at around 3.30pm.
After being briefed by fire chiefs that lives could be lost, she left the IECC to go
home and then went to the Metropolitan Hotel in North Melbourne for dinner.
Ms Nixon has since apologised for leaving her post and has the support of Prime Minister
Kevin Rudd and Premier John Brumby to keep her job at the jointly commonwealth and state
funded VBRRA.
As police chief at the time of the fires, Ms Nixon was head of emergency response during
the inferno but said she left other "very capable" people in charge while she monitored
the situation.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe defended her absence from the IECC
when he appeared at the bushfires royal commission nearly 12 months ago.
"The chief commissioner doesn't have to sit there ... providing the chief commissioner
is satisfied that the coordination arrangements and structures are in place and are effectively
dealing with the coordination function," he told the commission in May last year.
There have also been calls for Victoria's emergency services minister Bob Cameron to
be called before the royal commission.
Mr Cameron was ultimately in charge on Black Saturday but he has still not given evidence
to the commission over a year since Australia's worst bushfires.
"He should have been the first witness," Arthurs Creek Brigade CFA captain David McGahy
told AAP on Thursday.
"It's an absurdity. He's the minister for emergency services, he's the boss and he's
still failed to appear."
Mr Cameron arrived at the control centre at 7pm and left at midnight but did not speak
to Ms Nixon or the premier over the entire evening.
Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said it was "absolutely essential" for Mr
Cameron to give testimony.
"At least appear before the royal commission and detail what happened to command and
control on Black Saturday," he told reporters.

NSW: Taronga tops Sydney's favourite attraction list
By Lisa Martin
SYDNEY, Aug 26 AAP - The loud pitter patter of baby elephant feet has helped Taronga
Zoo claim the title of Sydney's favourite attraction.
The zoo won 24 per cent of votes in the Sydney Chamber of Commerce's annual favourite
things survey of the city's inhabitants.
The birth of Asian elephant calf Luk Chai in July has also boosted zoo visitor numbers,
with Sydneysiders and tourists flocking to Taronga since his arrival.
Sydney Opera House came second in the survey of most popular attractions, with 22 per
cent of votes, followed by the Sydney Harbour Bridge/ Bridge Climb on 18 per cent.
And it seems visitors prefer trees to waves, with the Royal National Park securing
12 per cent of votes ahead of Bondi Beach on eight per cent.
But Taronga is set to retain its top status for some time due to a pachyderm baby boom,
with two other elephants at the zoo expected to give birth in 2010 and 2011.
Zoo spokesman Mark Williams said the zoo's profile also increased due to its participation
in a behind-the-scenes documentary on the Seven Network called The Zoo.
"The zoo can be like an iceberg. You see the top but you don't know about the remarkable
things going on underneath," he said.
"We've been part of a national television documentary ... and that's been very motivating
for people."
Meanwhile Circular Quay and The Rocks came up trumps as a favourite part of the city
with 49 per cent of votes.
Palm Beach and Manly are joint holders of Sydney's favourite beach title, sharing 17
per cent of the vote. Bondi had 15 per cent.
New Year's Eve and Australia Day were voted Sydney's favourite annual events, both
receiving 25 per cent of votes.
Sydney Chamber executive director Patricia Forsythe said the survey results were not surprising.
"The results show that Sydney's heart and soul continues to be based around the harbour
with the zoo, harbour bridge, opera house, Circular Quay and The Rocks continuing to dominate
the survey," she said.

Vic: Police question truck driver over fatal hit-and-run
MELBOURNE, Aug 4 AAP - Police are continuing to question a truck driver over a fatal
hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a Melbourne toddler two days ago.
Two-year-old Rusith Gajasingha died when he ran on to the street and into the path
of a truck as his parents looked on just outside their home in Chandler Road at Noble
Park, in Melbourne's south-east.
Witnesses to the hit-and-run said the driver of the truck stopped, walked back to the
accident scene, examined his truck and drove away. The boy died a short time later.
Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Cripps of the major collision investigation unit said police
were acting on a tip-off when they intercepted a truck in Kirkham Road West, Keysborough,
about 9.30am (AEST) today.
The driver, a 36-year-old man from Narre Warren, was arrested.
"The information we received was specific enough for us to identify the truck and the
driver and where he would be this morning," he told reporters.
"We made a few inquiries and at approximately 9.30 this morning we intercepted a vehicle
in Kirkham Road."
Brett McArthur, a manager at a fibreglass maker on the street where the suspect truck
was stopped by police, said about four police cars rushed to the scene this morning.
"The police pulled the truck over. The pursuit vehicle was there as well as what looked
like a forensic vehicle," Mr McArthur said.
Spray painter Harley Dalais said he saw the driver of a white Isuzu truck being taken
into custody.
"He (the truck driver) was casual, as if nothing had happened," Mr Dalais said.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a man was in the custody of major collisions police
and was "assisting with inquiries".
The truck was seized and taken to the police forensics centre in Macleod for examination.

FED: Brumby's to employ Vietnamese bakers

FED: Brumby's to employ Vietnamese bakers
BRISBANE, Feb 14 AAP - Leading Australian bakery franchise Brumby's is flying in 20
Vietnamese bakers - and they'll be making good dough for good dough.
Hit by a skills shortage, Brumby's went to Vietnam to recruit them to work in their
bakeries across Australia.
And they'll be paid almost $40,000 a year - a lot more than they could earn in their
own own country.
The bakers, all with Australian Trade Qualifications, will arrive next month on four-year
work visas.
Brumby's managing director Michael Sherlock said the decision to go offshore had been
a last resort after a two-year recruitment drive failed to secure enough qualified Australian
staff.
He said Brumby's opted for Vietnamese bakers because Vietnam was a former French colony
and they had been trained in traditional Western-style baking.
"The shortage of qualified bakers means some of our franchises have had to close in
recent months while other store owners who have wanted to expand have had to shelve those
plans," Mr Sherlock said.
"We are still advertising for apprentices in five states and are desperately looking
for qualified Australian bakers, but as a fallback we have turned to overseas staff."
Mr Sherlock said Brumby's bakeries in Ayr and Charters Towers in north Queensland were
recently closed due to the lack of skilled bakers.
Unions had raised concerns that some employees were exploiting foreign workers by paying
them less than award wages.
But Mr Sherlock said the Vietnamese would earn $39,100 a year which was above the award
wage set by the Department of Immigration and Migration.
Mr Sherlock said while foreign chefs had been coming to Australia since the 1950s,
the Australian government had only recently expanded its program to include trades such
as baking in the face of the skills shortage.
"Hopefully, with government and industry encouragement, we will soon see more young
Australians undertaking traditional trades like baking so we can overcome this skills
shortage," he said.

About Lumentis AB
Headquartered near Stockholm, Sweden, Lumentis designs, develops and delivers metro DWDM systems that maximize network utilization and drastically reduce the operational expenses for carriers and network operators. Within 12 months of the company's inception, Lumentis introduced a market-ready metro solution that does not require optical amplifiers. Lumentis' innovative system architecture tolerates more optical loss and provides more than twice the capacity of other systems. This allows DWDM-based metro networks to be implemented where it was previously not economically feasible. The performance of the Mentis solution was proven in an extensive transmission and interoperability test on a real city-fiber network by a third party testing facility, Validation AB in February 2002. An unamplified 98km ring with 40 wavelengths and 20 nodes was successfully tested showing error-free results. Further, Lumentis offers its Multi-Dimensional Scalability (MDS) platform that manages network size, traffic channel counts, capacity, wavelengths and management solutions. The privately held company was founded in September 2000 and is backed by Deutsche Bank Industrial Holdings AG, which provides the company with solid and long-term financing. Students live holiday lessons: Tiny Thanksgivings fill schools.(Metropolitan Times)(Cover Story)
At Arlington's Taylor Elementary School, first- and second-graders gathered Monday for an annual Thanksgiving feast, complete with handmade Pilgrim and Indian costumes.
At Oyster Bilingual Elementary School in the District, 27 fifth-graders traveled, all expenses paid by a local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter, to Plymouth, Mass., where New England's first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621.
At Laurel Elementary School in Prince George's County, kindergartners, with the help of their parents, made teepees and other types of miniature shelters modeled on the homes of American Indians.
Most public elementary schools contacted in the area took time this month to teach students about Thanksgiving and its history.
Of the 30 schools surveyed in Virginia, the District, and Montgomery and Prince George's counties, 26 were teaching students about the history of Thanksgiving in classes or with special events such as Thanksgiving meals. The remaining classes were emphasizing the "giving" aspect of the holiday by collecting items for those in need of food, clothing or both.
"I think it's just such a fabulous opportunity to see what our country is all about," said Lorraine Nasiatka, a retired second-grade teacher who began the program for first- and second-graders at Taylor Elementary in 1982.
"I really think it teaches them the values of our country: cooperation, sacrifice and appreciation," she said as both grades gathered in the school gymnasium to feast on turkey and corn pudding.
At Laurel Elementary School, fifth-graders are studying the Pilgrim culture, said Gale Filler, the school's acting principal.
Today they'll dress up like the Pilgrims and have Colonial-era activities, including a cornhusking party.
At Burning Tree Elementary School in Bethesda, learning about the Pilgrims has landed some students on the Internet.
As part of a Scholastic Network activity on the World Wide Web, students got to converse live with re-enactors of the Mayflower's voyage to America.
One of the Pilgrims being portrayed was a Burning Tree student's ancestor.
Marion Richter, a reading specialist at the school, said the students are taught to separate fact from fiction about the holiday, which includes a lesson about the Pilgrims' escape from religious persecution in Europe.
"This is part of the Colonial culture," she said. "You can't split Colonial America from religion."
But those lessons are reserved for history classes. School officials, who said they are trying to preserve the separation of church and state, don't allow religion to be part of modern celebrations.
"We don't tie it into a specific religion, so we talk about the commonalities like joining for the feast, getting together with family and friends, being thankful for blessings, but we keep away from any religious doctrine," said Cathy David, the principal of Charles Barrett Elementary School in Alexandria.
That way of celebrating the holiday has drawn criticism from several groups, including the Southern California-based Gateways to Better Education.
"For good education's sake, let's teach the holiday the way it was meant to be," said Kim Buehrer, vice president of Gateways. "It makes for better education to teach about the holidays accurately. It is perfectly legal."
Organizations such as the National Education Association try to encourage schools to promote diversity in their curriculums, said Ron Houston, an NEA program and training specialist.
But inclusion and diversity shouldn't replace the holiday's history, he said.
Diversity is an aspect being taught at Belvedere Elementary School in the Annandale area, where preschoolers and Head Start children gathered yesterday to have what school officials called an international Thanksgiving feast.
"We call it that because we have so many diverse cultures in our school," said Melissa Murray, a preschool teacher.
"Although Thanksgiving was traditionally an American holiday," she said, the school tries to teach that people from every culture can "come together and be thankful for what we have and learn from one another."
More than 75 students, teachers, parents and friends participated by singing and eating. Many of the parents brought foods representative of their cultures.
"We provided the turkey," Ms. Murray said.
Some schools focus on giving.
Students at Takoma Educational Center in the District put on a Thanksgiving dance to gather food to donate last week.
"Admission was two cans of vegetables," Assistant Principal Thomas Simpson said.
Students decorated and assembled food baskets for needy students and their parents, Mr. Simpson said. They plan to show their handiwork today at a student assembly before school officials distribute the baskets to families.
At Arlington's Taylor Elementary, first-graders dressed as Indians wore vests made of grocery bags covered with colorful crayon drawings and necklaces strung with uncooked pasta, cereal and bits of paper.
The Pilgrims wore crepe-paper collars and construction-paper hats.
After almost a week of making costumes and learning the customs of both cultures, little Pilgrims and Indians sitting side-by-side erupted into activity when Principal Ralph Stone made a pronouncement after allowing a moment of silence to give thanks.
Little Indian Jimmy Ingram, 6, got the message: "The Pilgrims share with the Indians, and the Indians share with the Pilgrims."

UPTON, WALDEN STATEMENT ON ESTIMATED BURDEN OF FCC'S INTERNET RULES.
WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce:
Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) today issued the following statement regarding the Federal Communications Commission's submission of its "Network Neutrality" rules to the Office of Management and Budget:
"More than six months after it adopted an order to regulate the Internet, the FCC has finally submitted the rules to the Office of Management and Budget, which must still review and approve the submission. The FCC's estimate of the paperwork burden has already tripled. One has to wonder whether the FCC will also finally admit it has grossly underestimated the burden on innovation, investment, and jobs. The House has already disapproved these rules and now we are one step closer to review of these job-crushing regulations by the Senate and the courts."
Cottage Grove man sentenced for sale of stolen merchandise; The Oakdale business owner received five years probation.(BUSINESS)
Byline: JIM BUCHTA; STAFF WRITER
Cottage Grove businessman John Thomas Jundt was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court to five years of probation on one count of trafficking stolen property. In a plea agreement Jundt admitted that he bought more than $49,000 worth of stolen merchandise and sold it over the Internet through Oakdale-based InetDVD.com.
At the sentencing, Judge Michael J. Davis cited his early plea and cooperation with investigators. Jundt admitted using the U.S. mail to ship stolen goods to out-of-state buyers. In late February, Judge Davis sentenced four others, each on one count of conspiracy. Mark Jerome Terry of St. Paul and William John Terry of Stacy, Minn., were sentenced to 24 months; Rachel Lynn Miller of Roseville got 20 months, and Daniel Adolph LaBarre of St. Paul was sentenced to a year and one day. At an earlier sentencing Rodney Jay Shafer of West St. Paul and Daniel Schott Reetz of St. Paul both got 24 months.
Jundt sold the stolen merchandise as high-quality "used" goods through eBay, Amazon.com and their own Internet and retail outlets. Much of the merchandise was stolen from Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy stores throughout the Midwest and was sold to Jundt for pennies on the dollar. Some of those stolen goods were also sold to a Woodbury-based business owned by Christopher Allen Janota of St. Paul, who pleaded guilty in late January to one count of conspiracy in connection to the scam. His sentencing date has not been scheduled.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS ACT TO GUARANTEE FREE INTERNET ACCESS.
THE HAGUE, The Netherlands -- The following information was released by the Netherlands Government Information Service (RVD):
The Telecommunications Act is to be amended to guarantee free access to the internet.
This was announced to the House of Representatives on Tuesday 24 May 2011 by Maxime Verhagen, Minister for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation.
Skype and WhatsApp
Some mobile internet providers have recently announced a surcharge on certain services owing to investments in the network and the decline in mobile voice and text traffic. Mr Verhagen is not opposed to payment based on volume of data or speed of transmission, but the government considers a surcharge on services like Skype or WhatsApp to be excessive.
Net neutrality
Within the next few weeks, Mr Verhagen will submit a bill to amend the Telecommunications Act, thereby anchoring 'net neutrality' in law. The amendment will protect consumers by preventing providers from blocking or charging extra for specific internet-based services via mobile phone. The House recently supported a motion by Representative Bruno Braakhuizen calling for the introduction of such a measure.
European Union
Mr Verhagen will also hold consultations at European Union level on free access to the internet. The planned amendment will make the Netherlands one of the world's first countries to guarantee free internet access by law.
Roku Reaches Milestone with 15 Million Channel Downloads.
Roku, Inc., an Internet TV platform announced that it has delivered 15 million channel downloads to its base of more than one million Roku viewers.
According to the Company, the growth in channels installed has been driven by two factors: the expanding selection of entertainment in the Roku Channel Store; and accelerating sales fueled by the company's recent move into U.S. retail stores. Roku predicts it will surpass 3 million customers by the end of this year.
"We're seeing a tremendous amount of growth and excitement around the Roku platform-from the number of Roku players we are selling to the amount of content our customers are consuming," said Roku Founder and CEO Anthony Wood. "The popularity of Roku is driven by our inexpensive price points, which drive mainstream adoption; and the strength of our open platform, which benefits content partners who want to easily reach a rapidly growing TV audience."
With its launch in 2008 as the original Netflix streaming player, Roku said that it became the first Internet TV device platform to take hold with mainstream American consumers. In 2009, Roku added the Roku Channel Store, the first true app store and open development environment for long- and short-form streaming entertainment to the TV. Roku is the partner of choice for content owners who want to reach TV viewers directly. The simplicity of the Roku platform sets it apart-allowing developers to quickly deploy content with a variety of monetization options.
"Roku is clearly the easiest streaming device for consumers to use," said Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback, "and it's also easy to develop for. We quickly built a great looking application, and have been extremely happy with the response from both our existing viewers, and new ones who discovered us on the platform. It's great to be among the top Roku channels!"
With more than 225 entertainment channels and counting, Roku players deliver the best collection of streaming entertainment available for the TV. Customers can choose from more than 100,000 movies and TV shows from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Crackle and Revision3; live and on-demand sports from NBA Game Time, NHL GameCenter Live and Ultimate Fighting Championship; music from Pandora, MOG, Rdio, and TuneIn Radio; photo and video sharing from Flickr and Facebook; plus news and entertainment from around the world.

ISS intends to deliver additional Proventia appliance series with ever-increasing protection and prevention capabilities including inline prevention at multi-gigabit speeds in the next quarter. By the end of 2003, ISS expects to introduce a series of Proventia appliances that unifies multi-function protection technologies including inline prevention, firewall, VPN, gateway anti-virus and spam filtering into a single appliance managed by one, central management system. This series is designed to eliminate the need for managing and maintaining such technologies in multiple standalone forms.
"ISS' Proventia appliances are intended to give customers a single point of protection to prevent all forms of attack, eliminating the need for standalone firewalls, gateway anti-virus and other traditional point technologies that alone fail to provide complete protection against today's complex threats," said Tom Noonan, Internet Security Systems' president and chief executive. "With Proventia, we are simplifying the role of security for our customers, enabling them to focus on their core business operations with the peace of mind that they are protected by ISS."
Proventia appliances are based on ISS' market-leading protection technology. ISS' ability to accurately detect threats lays the foundation for Proventia's inline prevention capabilities and sets it apart from other inline products that plague enterprises by erroneously blocking legitimate traffic.
"By 2007 we believe that roughly 80 percent of all security products will be delivered in an appliance," said Charles Kolodgy, research director at IDC. "ISS has enjoyed success as the worldwide market leader in the network intrusion detection software market and is it effectively positioning itself to succeed in the security appliance market with its launch of Proventia."
