FED:Wellard applies for cattle export permit

Live cattle exports to Indonesia could be boosted significantly by the end of August,
with Wellard Rural Exports applying to the federal government for a permit.

Exports were banned for a month after video footage revealed cruel slaughter techniques
in some Indonesian abattoirs.

The ban was lifted in early July, and Elders has today become the first to resume exports,
loading three thousand cattle onto a ship at Darwin.

Wellard says it's lodged an application to export seven thousand cattle from Wyndham
in Western Australia to two clients based in Indonesia.

Depending on the timing of government approval, Wellard hopes to resume shipping by
mid to late August.
