NSW: Unions heads to IRC over Caltex dispute

SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - A dispute between Caltex and refinery workers could go beforethe NSW industrial commission today with workers claiming serious safety problems on site.

For two days unions have been threatening that some 400 contractors and maintenanceworkers at the Kurnell refinery, in Sydney's south, could walk off the job.

The unions have warned any walk-out could jeopardise petrol supplies.

But Caltex, which supplies two-thirds of the state's fuel, has denied industrial actionby the workers would affect supplies.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) acting state secretary John Parkin saidthe initial dispute was over rostering changes and failure to pay superannuation.

After a stopwork meeting this morning, however, unions had discovered gas leaks attwo on-site plants.

AMWU occupational health and safety officer Mark Dal Molin (Dal Molin) said at today'sstopwork meeting staff had chosen not to strike.

He said about 125 contract maintenance staff at the refinery's sulphur and diesel plants, however, were refusing to work, citing safety concerns.

Caltex has sought urgent talks in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission this afternoonto try and resolve the matter.
